About the School Improvement Council at Walhalla High School

The School Improvement Council (SIC) is mandated by law and serves as an advisory committee to the school’s principal and faculty. The SIC brings parents, educators, students and community stakeholders together to work collectively to improve the school. The SIC is responsible for working with school administration to develop and support the five-year school improvement plan. The SIC also monitors and evaluates the school’s success in reaching the plan’s goals and objectives.

Walhalla High School SIC accomplished the following goals during the 2017-2018 school year:
  • Increased student voice on SIC by allowing more time for students to share their ideas and perspective during monthly meetings
  • Increased community voice on SIC by highlighting community members each month
  • Increased Hispanic and bilingual representation on SIC and formed the Latino Outreach Committee
  • Formed the Wellness Committee and supported the WHS Green Steps Initiative and the Litter Free Football Game
  • Supported student led service project to build a nature trail and outdoor education environment on school grounds
  • Held parent workshops and created instructional videos to help parents navigate Canvas, a new online learning and grading system
  • Hosted Family Focus Night and Open House in January with presentations on Love and Logic
  • Students held the First Annual Snow Ball, a semi-formal dance for all classes to raise money for the White Christmas fund and collect canned goods for the local food pantry
  • Initiated College Information Night for Juniors and their parents
  • Supported monthly Parent Seminars for Hispanic families
  • Promoted Teacher Appreciation throughout the school year with monthly drawings for prizes, a social media campaign and a Cinco De Mayo luncheon hosted by Hispanic parents
As a result of our efforts we were awarded the Dick and Tunky Riley Award for SIC Excellence in 2018.

Our commitment to SIC excellence will continue to grow during the 2018-2019 school year. In addition to supporting our 2017-2018 goals, we will expand our growth in the areas of Latino Outreach and Wellness. We have partnered with the WHS Soccer Teams and the Walhalla Recreation Department to sponsor a Wellness Fair to be held at the soccer field in downtown Walhalla on February 9th, 2019. This event will feature a variety of organizations that provide resources to support health and wellness in our community. Additionally, we will be hosting a Children’s Book Drive to distribute free books to children and families at this event.

The WHS SIC is dedicated to promoting a positive school culture where all students and families feel welcome and involved in the educational experience at Walhalla High School. We welcome you to Walhalla High School and we invite and encourage your input and involvement with SIC.
